The shocking amount of compensation awarded to the Abdallah family

The Abdallah family have been awarded a tiny amount of compensation, four years after the deaths of three young kids.

In February 2020, Samuel William Davidson was driving in the Sydney suburb of Oatlands when he struck a group of four kids, killing Abdallah children Antony, 13, Angelina, 12 and Sienna Abdallah, 9, and their cousin Veronique Sakr, 11.

Now, four years on, father Danny and mother Leila have won a payout from Davidson totalling a mere $90,000.

The NSW District Court ordering Davidson pay $60,000, plus costs, to Abdallah's three surviving children, Liana, Alex and Michael.

Mr Abdallah sued Mr Davidson last year seeking payment for ongoing trauma to Liana, who was injured but survived the catastrophic accident, and his sons who suffered the psychological trauma of losing their siblings.

The court order, obtained by Daily Mail Australia, said that the net sum for three children was to be paid to the NSW Trustee and Guardian for investment until each of them turns 18 years old.

Following the deadly crash, Samuel William Davidson, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident, was sentenced in 2021 to 28 years' jail with a non-parole period of 21 years, which was reduced on appeal last year to a maximum of 20 years with a minimum of 15 years.

Mr Abdallah's court action against Davidson, who will be in prison until at least 2035, is believed to have been lodged against the driver's insurance company which will make the payout.

Abdallah and Sakr families' memorial triumph

The Abdallah and Sakr families have won a lengthy battle with Oatlands Golf Club, to implement a permanent memorial for their children.

In February 2020, the lives of the Abdallah and Sakr families were turned upside down when their children Antony, 13, Angelina, 12, Sienna, eight, and Veronique Sakr, 11, were hit by a car on the perimeter of the western Sydney golf course.

Now, almost four years on from the tragedy, Danny Abdallah has confirmed that a memorial garden for his children and niece had finally won approval.

Oatlands Golf Club had rejected several designs for a memorial on the site of the crash, but the club has now finally agreed to license a small parcel of land to the Abdallah and Sakr families for a private garden.

“We persisted, we got there,” Abdallah told 2GB on Wednesday.

“It was very stressful and it took its toll on us.”

The landscape hedge garden will include plants that blossom each February and a plinth for each of the children.

The families hope to complete the memorial by Christmas.

The golf club shut down negotiations for the memorial in 2021, after rejecting all of the family's suggestions for the memorial as too large, saying they would unduly remind neighbours of the tragedy.

Mr Abdallah did not want to dwell on why the club changed its approach, saying “I want to move forward.”

The news of the memorial comes after the Abdallah family confirmed they are expecting another baby.

Abdallah family confirms heartwarming news

Three years after the tragic loss of their three children in a horrific car crash, Danny and Leila Abdallah have announced the are expecting another baby.

In 2020, the Abdallah's life was turned upside down when their children Antony, 13, Angelina, 12, Sienna, eight, and their niece Veronique Sakr, 11, were hit by a car on their way to buy ice cream.

The couple welcomed a baby girl in March 2022, and have now announced that their family is growing once again.

Danny Abdallah announced the heartwarming news on 2GB on Wednesday morning saying, “Leila’s well, she’s pregnant again. I got one past the goalkeeper! And yeah, she’s been pretty busy with the kids.”

He said the family are “OK, as good as can be”.

With another baby on the way, the couple will be the parents of five children, as well as the three killed in the tragedy.

The crash that claimed the lives of the Abdallah children happened in December 2020, when Samuel William Davidson was driving recklessly and mounted the curb at high speed before striking the children in his ute.

Davidson later pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter and charges related to injuries sustained by three other children involved in the crash.

Initially, he was sentenced in April 2021 to 28 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 21 years.

However, in 2022, his sentence was reduced by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to 20 years, with a non-parole period of 15 years, as they deemed the original sentence excessively harsh.

Despite the devastating situation, the Abdallahs forgave the driver just days after he wiped out half of their family.

Mr Davidson thanked the family for their forgiveness, motivating him to change his ways while in prison.

Sitcom star jailed for 30 years

That ‘70s Show star Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women who were in the Church of Scientology with him in 2003.

Masterson, 47, who was found guilty of raping victims Jen B and N Trout in his Hollywood home in June, received his sentence on Thursday, California time.

The actor remained silent in court as he received 15 years for each count, which will be served consecutively.

“One way or another you will have to come to terms with your prior actions, and their consequences,” Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedoe told Masterson, according to the New York Post.

The victims testified that they passed out after Materson gave them drinks, then he proceeded to violently rape them.

Prosecutors claimed that Materson raped N Trout so violently that she threw up in her mouth.

Prior to the sentencing, N Trout read out her victim statement, where she slammed the actor for his violent actions, but also forgave him and hoped that he would do better in prison.

“You relish in hurting women. It is your addiction. It is without question your favourite thing to do,” she said, according to court reporter Meghann Cuniff.

“Life is precious and fragile. Find your heart … Learn something. Read books. Listen to the brightness of nothing and get well. I forgive you."

Jen B, on the other hand, reiterated the fact that there was no conspiracy to take down Materson or the Church of Scientology.

This comes after the defence had previously argued that the sexual acts were consensual, accusing the women of co-ordinating their stories to discredit former Hollywood star.

The victims also told the court that Scientology officials told them not to report the crime because Masterson was a high-ranking member of the church, and instead they were put through an ethics program.

After an initial deadlock vote, the jury found Masterson guilty of two counts of rape, but could not reach a unanimous verdict on a third count alleging that the former star also assaulted his ex-girlfriend Christina Bixler.

However, he was not charged with any counts of drugging as there were no toxicology evidence to back up the women's statement, which will likely play a role in Masterson’s plan to appeal the verdict.

The Church of Scientology also released a statement, criticising the notion that they tried to silence the complaints, claiming that the women's testimony were “uniformly false”.

“The Church has no policy prohibiting or discouraging members from reporting criminal conduct of anyone — Scientologists or not — to law enforcement,”

“Quite the opposite, church policy explicitly demands Scientologists abide by all laws of the land.”

Image: Lucy Nicholson - Pool/Getty Images

Man purchases home for $1.50 - but there’s a catch!

A man struggling to enter the property market has revealed how he purchased his home for just $1.50 - but there’s a catch.

Danny McCubbin, who is originally from the Gold Coast, wanted to upend his life once more and move from busy London.

On his mind was a quiet, peaceful area where he could enjoy his life – and the small town in Mussomeli, Mussomeli, took his breath away.

“I fell in love with this town,” Danny told news.com.au.

Danny took a leap of faith and bought his home in 2019 for just $1.50 (plus a further 3000 euros for notary and inspection fees).

However, a condition of the house was that he would have to renovate it within three years of purchase or he’d have to pay a further 5000 euros (AU$7,571) to the government.

The pandemic threw a spanner in the works, making Danny’s mission to renovate his home almost impossible.

Danny then decided it would be cheaper to purchase another home and renovate that.

“I ended up buying myself a house for 8000 euros, which is less than the cost of my car. And I spent 5000 on it and renovated that,” he revealed.

“That’s where I live now. It’s a beautiful place, it’s got a view of the mountains, it’s just perfect for me.”

Danny offered his best tips to those looking to do the same: spend time in the city where you plan to buy, see as many houses as you can, bring a friend who knows a bit about engineering, and don’t fall for the view.

Images: Instagram

What made Bob Saget’s Danny Tanner so different from other sitcom dads

Bob Saget, who died on Jan. 9, 2022, is probably best remembered for his role as Danny Tanner on the popular sitcom “Full House,” which aired from 1987 to 1995.

I think fans of the show have such fond memories of this character because Danny exemplified what it meant to “be there” as a parent. A single dad whose wife had passed away, he was eager to lend an ear to daughters D.J., Stephanie and Michelle, offering them support and reassurance through the twists and turns of childhood and adolescence.

Why heap so much praise on a sitcom dad? It’s easy to disregard TV as mere mindless entertainment. But entertainment media can both reflect and reshape culture – including how fathers interact with their children. They can influence how viewers think about fathers, regardless of the accuracy of those portrayals.

As someone who studies stereotypes of fathers, I view Danny as an avatar of the changing expectations of fatherhood that began in the late 1970s.

Danny Tanner and ‘being there’

Danny Tanner was a 30-something widower when Full House premiered. That wasn’t a common situation for his demographic – less than 1% in his bracket shared it – and it allowed viewers to watch Danny parent his three daughters with the help of his brother-in-law and his best friend.

Nonetheless, in nearly every episode, viewers saw Danny “being there” for his family. “Being there” is a concept that describes being physically and emotionally involved with your children. This term took on particular significance for fathers in the late 20th century. “Being there” allowed dads to be seen as more than just financial providers and recognized that fathers interact with their children in varied and important ways.

In the earlier part of the century, fathers were assumed to be breadwinners and not much else, a stereotype reflected in the era’s popular media. For example, sitcom fathers on “Father Knows Best,” which aired from 1954 to 1960, and “The Donna Reed Show,” which ended its run in 1966, bore little responsibility for actual child care beyond a pat on the head and some occasional discipline.

Beginning in the 1970s, psychologist Michael Lamb encouraged a change in how we thought about fathers and broadened the definition of what he called “father involvement.”

Lamb proposed three dimensions of father involvement: engagement, availability and responsibility. The last of these, responsibility – which involved financial support and parental guidance – could be spotted in some form in the preceding sitcoms. But engagement and availability, which tend to involve day-to-day emotional support, were almost entirely foreign.

Danny Tanner’s approach to fatherhood, by contrast, demonstrated perhaps the fullest realization of these changing expectations.

One episode, “Back to School Blues,” featured oldest daughter D.J. starting junior high. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t go well. She’s teased by older girls, wears the same outfit as one of the teachers, and spends lunch alone. (I was a year younger than D.J., and this episode made me nervous about my own entry into junior high.)

When Danny doesn’t approve of D.J.‘s attempts to look older to fit in and make friends, she storms off to her room saying she wants to be left alone. Danny says he can’t do that, and then listens as she explains everything that went wrong at school.

In this short scene, he reinforced family rules and provided emotional support, while showing that he would “be there” for D.J. whenever she needed.

A different kind of dad

Though Danny represented a departure from the typical sitcom father, he didn’t exactly spearhead a new trend.

Immature and irresponsible fathers – the kind seen in popular shows like “The Simpsons,” “Home Improvement” and “Married … With Children” – were more commonplace. To this day, the stereotype of the bumbling dad persists on TV.

Danny comforts D.J. after she admits she isn’t happy with her body.

In my research, I found that single sitcom dads with full child care responsibilities were shown interacting with their children more often than married sitcom dads. Compared to their married counterparts on the tube, they were more likely to offer kindness, care, love, support and guidance. Along with Danny, these characters included Mr. Drummond on “Diff’rent Strokes,” Tony Micelli in “Who’s the Boss?” and Maxwell Sheffield on “The Nanny.”

On the other hand, married sitcom father-child interactions were more likely to involve criticism and sarcastic humor. In fact, married sitcom fathers often made jokes at their children’s expense.

Why does this discrepancy exist?

My research has found that in real life, married fathers are thought to be loving and kind but with room for improvement as parents. They’re seen as the right-hand man to mothers, who have taken the lead in parenting. Because of this, people expect more bumbling and less skill.

Single dads, however, tend to be viewed as selfless and dedicated, because the assumption is that they’ve put their children above all else.

Danny Tanner isn’t the novelty today that he was in the early 1990s. But if his character is instructive in any way, it’s that dads shouldn’t have to lose their wives to be the best parent they can be.<!-- End of code. Leila Abdallah dedicates award to “all the bereaved mothers out there”

The Sydney woman who lost three of her six children when they were struck by a drunk and drugged driver last year has been named mother of the year.

Leila Abdallah and her husband Danny lost son Antony Abdallah, 13 and daughters Angelina Abdallah, 12, and Sienna Abdallah, eight when they were killed alongside their cousin Veronique Sakr, 11, on February 1 2020.

The kids were riding their bikes on a footpath in Oatlands, northwest Sydney, when a Mitsubishi Triton ute hit them just before 8pm.

The man behind the wheel, Samuel William Davidson, 31, was sentenced to 21 years behind bars with no parole last month at Parramatta District Court after pleading guilty to multiple charges including four counts of manslaughter, each carrying a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Leila and Danny inspired others by forgiving Davidson, saying their frustration lay with the "way our culture loves drugs and alcohol".

After winning this year’s annual accolade, Leila said she dedicated her award to all women grieving the loss of a child.

“I’d like to dedicate the award to all the bereaved mothers out there,” she told Sydney radio 2GB on Thursday.

“A lot of people have been inspired and touched with the forgiveness and they were able to forgive in their own family and accept their grief.

“Kids are the biggest joy any parents can have.”

Davidson had been drinking for 12 hours at his home nearby and was driving up to 133km/h just moments before he crashed into seven kids who were on their way to buy ice cream.

Judge James Bennett said Davidson’s “horrific” actions and “menacing” driving that day revealed he had abandoned all moral responsibility.

“The manner of driving was such that tragedy was inevitable,” Judge Bennett said. “The magnitude of the tragedy extends to the unimaginable.”

The seven children were making their way to a local IGA store when they were blindsided by the out-of-control ute around 7:50pm.

Family Voice Australia said Leila “has demonstrated grace, charity, and peace beyond measure despite the horrific loss she and her husband have suffered and continue to suffer”.

“There could be no better example of how to deal with such a significant and life-changing family disaster than Mrs Abdallah has demonstrated, even though her heart must still be breaking daily because of the loss of three of her precious children.

“Yet she continues to express forgiveness rather than seek revenge.”

Family Voice Australia is hosting the annual Mother of the Year award for the first time this year, after Barnardos Australia revealed they will not be running the award after 25 years in February.

Thief breaks into home of family who lost three kids in crash tragedy

A family who lost their three children in a horror car crash in February of 2020 have been robbed by a masked intruder in broad daylight.

Leila Abdallah lost Anthony, Angelina and Sienna, who all died when a drunk and drugged driver ran them over in Oatlands.

Now, she and her husband Danny have been hit with another blow after reports claim the mother was at her home in Telopea when a masked intruder broke inside at around 11:45 am on Wednesday.

Ms Abdallah was standing in the kitchen looking at photos of her children when she saw the perpetrator near the front door.

He was holding a bag and other belongings but quickly fled when she confronted him.

CCTV caught the man wearing black track pants and a dark blue hoodie.

He was recorded running away from the house and hopping into a white Audi S3 Sedan.

The man, who had an accomplice driver, had taken jewellery, handbags and other possessions from the upstairs bedrooms.

Ms Abdallah told reporters that while the material value of the possessions was not important, some of the stolen items had sentimental value linked to her children.

“He took a watch, but it’s not about the watch. This watch reminds me of me and Angelina walking to the store to buy this watch. So it’s a bit sentimental for us, and invading our privacy,” she said.

“God’s watching him, God knows who he is,” Ms Abdallah went on to say, calling on the man to listen to his conscience.

Ms Abdallah says the man may have taken an iPhone that belonged to her late son Anthony.

The robber is believed to possibly have been inside for 10 minutes ransacking the bedrooms.

Police are calling on the man and the driver of the Audi to turn themselves in, saying the Abdallahs have had to face horror after horror since losing their three children and their cousin Veronique Sakr.

“In the last 12 months, the victims of the Telopea incident have endured an incredible ordeal,” Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson, Cumberland area police commander said on Thursday.

“And I appeal to the conscience of the people responsible for this crime to hand themselves in to the police, and I also appeal to them to return the property of those victims.”

The intruder is described as being Caucasian, skinny, about 183 centimetres tall, aged in his 20s and with light hair.

The Audi’s registration plates read as EGJ-56M, and is thought to have been stolen from North Rocks earlier this week.
